If you are wondering how much it costs to put a dog down, or what the cost of putting a cat to sleep might be, the honest answer is that it varies across the UK. The price of pet euthanasia depends on a handful of things: whether it happens at a clinic or at home, the time of day, whether sedation is included, and the aftercare you choose for your pet.
It is completely normal to think about money at a time like this, and nobody should feel guilty for asking. Knowing the cost in advance means you can focus on your pet when the time comes. Here is exactly what we charge at Cartref, with nothing hidden.

What Affects the Cost of Pet Euthanasia?
Why one quote can look quite different from another, whether you are pricing dog euthanasia or cat euthanasia.
Clinic or Home Visit
A clinic appointment fits into a practice's normal day. A home visit means the vet travels to you and gives you their undivided time, so it usually costs more.
Time of Day
Evening, weekend and bank holiday appointments, or emergency visits arranged at short notice, often carry additional charges wherever you go.
Sedation
We always sedate first so your pet drifts into a deep sleep before anything else happens. Some practices include sedation as standard and others charge for it separately, so it is worth asking.
Your Pet's Size
The euthanasia itself is often priced the same whatever the size of your pet, but cremation is usually priced by weight, so a large dog will cost more to cremate than a cat.
Your Aftercare Choice
Aftercare can make the biggest difference to the total. Burying your pet at home, a communal cremation and an individual cremation with ashes returned are all priced very differently.
Travel Distance
For home visits, some providers charge more the further they need to travel. It is always worth checking whether mileage is included in the price you are quoted.
When comparing prices, it helps to ask exactly what is included. A lower headline figure may not include sedation, out-of-hours visits or cremation, while a higher one may cover everything.

Aftercare Costs Explained
What happens after your pet has passed is often the biggest part of the total cost.
Home Burial
If you own your home, you may be able to bury your pet in the garden. There is no aftercare fee, although there are some rules and practical points to follow.

Many vet practices can arrange a communal cremation, where several pets are cremated together. It is generally the least expensive cremation, but ashes are not returned. This is not something we arrange at Cartref.
Individual Private Cremation
Your pet is cremated on their own and their ashes are returned to you. This is the option we offer, through Bluebell Wood Pet Crematorium, with ashes back within 7–10 working days.

Dog euthanasia at home in the UK usually costs more than a clinic appointment. Here is what the difference pays for.

Some animal charities, such as the PDSA, provide reduced-cost veterinary care to owners who meet their eligibility criteria. Check their website to see whether you qualify.

Some pet insurance policies contribute towards euthanasia and/or cremation costs. Check your policy documents or call your insurer before the appointment if you can.
